This is a self catered, tag-a-long camping tour.
We begin our tour spending the day visiting Tinaroo Falls and other local attractions. We cross the tablelands today as we make our way to the Peninsular development road passing through Mareeba and Lakeland to Laura. Spend the afternoon exploring the nationally significant Quinkin rock art galleries. Travel to Artemis Station where we hope to spot the rare golden-shouldered parrot nesting in the termite mounds. Weipa is the next day’s destination passing through Coen, Archer River, past Scherger RAAF base and Napranum. An easy day is spent at Weipa with a mine and town tour in the morning and a free afternoon to fish, shop or just relax. Retracing our tracks to the Telegraph road, we head north through Moreton telegraph station and Bramwell junction to our overnight camp.
Leaving the ‘vans, we sample the original telegraph track, (with some very interesting creek crossings) before returning to camp. Enjoy a swim at beautiful Fruit Bat falls before crossing the Jardine by ferry. We make our way to Seisia, our base camp for the next six nights. For five days we explore all over the peninsular, visiting historic sites and local attractions like Muttee head, the ruins at Somerset, the very tip of the mainland, and plane wrecks.
Our tour includes a ferry trip to Thursday Island with accommodation on Horn Island and informative tours of both islands. Turning south, we head to Heathlands and once again, leaving the ‘vans behind travel out through the rainforest to Captain Billy Landing. On the southern development road we continue to our camp at Archer River with time for a swim before dinner. Visit Cape York House in Coen and relive the history of this old gold mining settlement before travelling via Musgrave, Hann crossing and Breeza Plains to our camp at Kalpower Crossing on the Normanby River. We make our way through Lakefield National Park to Old Laura Homestead, and cross the picturesque Battlecamp Range to Ellim Beach where we spend a day enjoying the beachfront and coloured cliffs. We depart for Cooktown where we end this great tour with a celebratory farewell dinner.
