Cooper Pedy - Broken Hill
This is a self catered, tag-a-long camping tour.
Departing Coober Pedy we cross the vast gypsum strewn Moon Plains to the striking Arckaringa hills, nestled in the Painted Desert. Continue via the remote community of Oodnadatta to our camp amongst the sand dunes. Visit the old Pedirka railway siding and abandoned Dalhousie homestead ruins. We take time to enjoy a delightfully warm swim in the Dalhousie thermal springs before continuing to our camp at Mt Dare homestead.
After refuelling we head north through the flood-out channels of the Finke River and Mayfield swamp to Old Andado homestead, surrounded by brilliant red sand dunes. Old Andado was the departure point of Dr Cecil Madigan’s scientific expedition across the Northern Simpson Desert in 1939. After travelling to North Bore and the Mac Clark Conservation Reserve that preserves a small stand of the rare wattle Acacia Peuce, we begin our journey east across hundreds of assorted sand dunes, wide swales and even dry river crossings. Experience five million star camping between the dunes and marvel at the crystal clear skies.
We cross the wide sandy bed of the Hay River before turning south into Queensland, where we generally follow Eyre Creek down through isolated pastoral lands. The silence is hard to believe. BUT, we can expect numerous flat tyres, huge sand dunes, bumpy conditions, lots of low range 1st & 2nd gear travelling, some very basic campsites and no showers during our days in the desert. After crossing Nappanerica dune, Birdsville will be a welcome sight for hot showers and a well-earned celebration. Leaving Birdsville behind we head down the iconic Birdsville track through Sturt’s Stony desert, and the northwest flood-out of the Cooper to Innamincka and our camp along Cooper Creek.
We visit the Burke & Wills “Dig Tree” before heading south through pastoral properties, vast gas and oil fields, and the dingo fence to Tibooburra. The country is a changing vista of gibber plains, low vegetated sand hills dry lake beds. South of the border it changes again to open saltbush plains and sheep country as we head to our final destination, Broken Hilll.
