Broken Hill - Coober Pedy

This is a self catered, tag-a-long camping tour.

2018 Simpson Desert

Our 13 day Simpson Desert crossing is one way to Coober Pedy, departing from Broken Hill. We travel through open saltbush plains and sheep and cattle country to the old gold town of Milparinka and Depot Glen, home to Sturt the explorer and his party for six months. They were unable to continue their explorations inland because of a drought. We visit Tibooburra, then through the dog fence, the longest man made structure on earth, to Innamincka and our camp on the banks of Cooper Creek.

We meander through pastoral land, gas and oil fields, water holes and lake beds, and cross Sturt’s Stony desert to the Birdsville Track. Once one of the hardest mail routes in the world, it is now a well maintained outback road, but still with a tragic history. We spend a full day exploring the township of Birdsville, famous for its annual race meeting, but there is also the Dingo caves, Palm plantation, Waddi trees and even a chance to go fishing in the Diamantina river. Leaving the urban life we tackle Big Red and head out into the Simpson Desert on a track that stretches to the horizon. There are 100’s of red dunes on the French line, some are just low and simple, others just like Big Red seem tall and foreboding, but what a challenge.

Experience five million star camping between the dunes and marvel at the crystal clear skies. We visit Poeppel corner, the Atolls, Purnie Bore a vast wetlands created by the flow of artesian water from an oil exploration bore and Dalhousie, a natural mound spring where the water is so warm and relaxing. Re-fuelling at Mt Dare we travel south through Hamilton & Mt Sarah stations to Oodnadatta. Leaving the sand dunes behind, we pass through the Painted Desert and vast moon plains before our exciting journey concludes with a farewell dinner & accommodation in Coober Pedy.

Fuel is available at Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Birdsville and Mt Dare. The longest distance between fuel points is 600 kilometres.
